If then (2003)

In cooperation with the French dancer and choreographer Sebastien Cormier, Anne Juren developed the dance etude If then, which humorously explores the idea of the duo. At its core lies the tension between the free decision to work together and a simultaneously limited amount of space. On this island of infinite movement options, the performers, despite all discipline, repeatedly step on each other’s feet.

The choreographic arrangement functions as a metaphor for interpersonal negotiation processes, in which each individual impulse immediately meets the physical presence of the other. In this way, the piece transforms spatial constraint into a playful laboratory that explores the boundaries between necessary adaptation and choreographic freedom.

The piece was originally produced for the OFF Festival in Avignon, where it was performed several times in public spaces.
