A? (2003)

A first question when encountering dance could be: what was actually perceived? The answer appears as complex as the question is simple. It does not lend itself to a fixed conclusion, as the question operates on a semantic level while dance remains ephemeral. At the same time, dance can be understood as a form of language that unfolds through difference and interpretation, producing a set of conventions that makes it recognizable and open to negotiation.

A? developed from an initial choreography that Anne Juren presented to an invited audience, followed by a questionnaire. Based on these responses, she created a choreographic reformulation of what had been perceived, remembered, and described.

In this context, dance can be described as the presentation of a body performing specific movements for an audience within a defined frame. In A?, this framing is approached through a reduced movement vocabulary, a consistent frontality, the use of gaze, and a precise spatial arrangement. These choices can be read in relation to postmodern dance, particularly in their attention to reduction and to the conditions of perception, as seen in the work of Yvonne Rainer.

During the performance, Juren moved as slowly as possible. As soon as a movement began, the light was switched off. The movement itself therefore remained invisible and took place in the dark. The light returned only once she had come back to the position from which the movement had started. What was visible were the states before and after the movement, while the transition itself was withheld from view.

In this way, attention shifts from the visible execution of movement to the conditions under which it appears and disappears.
