J’aime (2004)
J’aime, I love, I like: at the heart of this choreographic duet lies the pleasure of dancing, of watching, and of being watched. Anne Juren and Alice Chauchat focus on a form of movement that exists not only on stage but also in everyday life: the shared, immediate dancing familiar from parties and clubs.
Drawing on their background in contemporary dance, the two choreographers and performers explore the power of attraction inherent in dance in its most direct form. Their interest lies less in representation than in the interplay of movement, perception, and desire: What is it exactly that fascinates us about dancing? What happens when we watch dancing bodies? And how are the pleasure of dancing, the act of showing that pleasure, and the gaze of the audience connected?
J’aime moves between stage and nightclub, between choreographic structure and raw energy. The music by DJ Assaultdrives the performance with intensity and creates a space in which the laws of theatre and those of the club intersect. The result is a choreography that is at once sensual, precise, and powerful, a performance about movement, rhythm, presence, and the social dynamics of dance.
The piece unfolds as a continuous build up of intensity: a concentrated, highly energetic dance experience that makes the shared sensuality between performers and audience palpable. Through the interplay of observation and display, bodily presence and choreographic composition, J’aime becomes a dense, structured, and joyful reflection on dance as both a social and an aesthetic practice.
