Dresscode (2005)

The collaboration between choreographer Anne Juren and the designer duo HartmannNordenholz explores the seductive power and underlying codes of classical Hollywood musicals. At its core lies the fascination with synchronised group dance, the precise and almost mechanical execution of movement by multiple bodies that creates an overwhelming uniform image of perfection. It was Presented during the Vienna Fashion Week.

The audience is confronted with ten identically dressed female performers who move in endless circular motion across a mirrored stage. Their costumes designed by HartmannNordenholz function as reflective uniforms, unchanging in form and colour yet optically active. Through their mirroring surfaces they multiply the space and dissolve the individual body into the mass. While celebrating the hypnotic beauty of synchronisation the piece simultaneously undermines it. Small deliberate deviations in timing direction or gesture quietly break the uniformity and expose the constructed nature of the seemingly flawless collective.

The performers maintain strikingly neutral almost detached facial expressions that contrast with the high energy of their choreography. This quiet detachment adds a layer of irritation and prevents the scene from becoming mere spectacle. The work transforms the iconic imagery of the Hollywood musical into a contemporary choreographic practice. It honours the seductive power of synchronised movement while gently dismantling its ideological foundations resulting in a performance that is as visually compelling as it is analytically sharp.
