We are all Mothers WAAM (2024)
We are all mothers WAAM by Anne Juren, created in collaboration with composer Matthias Kranebitter, premiered in 2024 within the framework of Wien Modern and brut Wien. The performance unfolds as a musical and choreographic dispositif that brings together dance, voice, and experimental composition. At its core, the work situates itself at the intersection of artistic practice and embodied knowledge, expanding choreography into a field where perception, sound, and physical experience are continuously renegotiated.
The performers operate simultaneously as dancers and as practitioners of bodily awareness. Their individual physical and emotional states become the material of the piece, entering into a shared process of transformation. Symptoms, sensations, and inner conditions are not represented but actively circulated, allowing the stage to function as a space of collective regulation and attention. In this shifting constellation, the boundaries between performer and witness, between action and reception, begin to dissolve.
Music plays a constitutive role in shaping this dynamic environment. Kranebitter’s composition, performed in close dialogue with the performers, does not accompany the choreography but actively generates its temporal and affective structure. Sound becomes a force that organizes attention, intensifies perception, and opens resonant spaces in which movement can emerge as a response rather than a predefined form.
The title We are all mothers reframes motherhood as a collective and relational practice rather than a fixed identity. It proposes care, responsibility, and interdependence as shared conditions that exceed biological or social definitions. At the same time, the work is informed by a personal layer, as it is dedicated to Anne Juren’s mother, who passed away in 2022. This dedication infuses the performance with a subtle yet persistent reflection on grief, memory, and the transformative potential of collective presence.
