As part of APAP IV/2006, Anne Juren initiated a series of research projects examining the parallels between athletic movement patterns—such as swimming, tennis, and soccer—and dance. It was called “Sport- und Tanzformen”. The piece “foot” emerged as a choreographic inquiry into the sport of soccer. Over a two-week collaborative process with the local football team PSV Salzburg, choreographer Anne Juren worked alongside linguist Fouad Asfour to develop a specific movement study. The outcome of this collaboration was presented on June 20, 2006, on the PSV Salzburg pitch and professionally filmed by a camera team.

The resulting film “foot” (35:00 min.) offers an artistic reflection on the mechanics of soccer. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, it was screened in cafés and bars in Bytom, Poland, venues where people gathered to watch the matches. Roland Rauschmeier transformed the footage into a sports report, which was broadcast on a local television station.

By attending training sessions and matches of PSV Salzburg, Juren and Asfour initiated a dialogue between artistic and athletic practice. Through observation, analysis, and collective experimentation, they questioned and redefined the rules governing movement. These modified rules were developed in collaboration with the athletes and rehearsed with the coach. The final piece removes the original objective of soccer—the scoring of goals—thereby revealing the structural conditions of the sport itself. How do game rules shape bodily movement? What movement patterns emerge from the logic of soccer? “foot” deconstructs the familiar aesthetics of the sport, exposing the invisible mechanisms that govern it.
